Who we are…
The City of Fulton had it’s first election on April 15th, 1902 after the Villages of Fulton and Oswego River Falls incorporated, forming what is now known as the City of Fulton. Since 1902, and the organizing of the City of Fulton Police Department, Fulton has been fortunate enough to have a willing and capable police force maintaining law and order.
First Uniformed Police Force (1904) - Standing from left, Mike Bray, Bill Hinsdale, Bill Blodgett, and Melvin Blodgett. Seated from left, Alex Pare, Judge Wilson, Chief Ross, Tom Alnutt.
Independence Parade (1918) - Fulton’s finest lead the independence day parade.
The City of Fulton Police Department had a motorcycle patrol from the beginning but it was discontinued in 1941 after a second patrol vehicle was purchased and two-way radios were installed in the vehicles. The motorcycle patrol returned to service in 1942.
Motorized Patrol (1930) - Members of Fulton’s motorized patrol stand next to a 1929 Model A Ford police vehicle. From left, Harry R. Holden, Edward Bressett, and James Tobin.
On September 20th, 1964 the Fulton Police Department received a note in cutout words/letters from a newspaper. The letter was postmarked September 9th, 1964 and addressed to the Fulton Police Chief. Inside was a note which stated “keep Robert Kennedy out of Oswego red.” At the time Robert Kennedy was scheduled to arrive at the Oswego County Airport and his security detail was briefed by the Fulton Police Department about the threat. The note and letter were sent to the FBI laboratory to be forensically examined but no fingerprints or DNA were extracted. The note and envelope are still stained from the forensic processing which had occurred.
The City of Fulton Police Department has grown to now be comprised of 35 sworn members which make up a patrol division, criminal investigations division, traffic and training division, and administration. In 1997 the Police Department logged more than 11,000 calls for service. In 2022 the Police Department logged more than 14,000 calls for service, brought back the K9 program and has now began a UAS (drone) program cooperatively with other Law Enforcement agencies.
